MOVEMENT MONTREAL ANNOUNCES ITS TEAM IN LE-PLATEAU-MONT-ROYAL

Montreal, Quebec -- on Monday, August 31, Movement Montreal announced its team in the Le-Plateau-Mont-Royal borough: Daniel Vazquez (Borough Mayor), John Tessier (City Councillor - Jeanne-Mance), Rebecca Lessard (Borough Councillor - Jeanne-Mance), Alexandre Zaezjev (City Councillor - Mile-End), and Maggie Bolduc (Borough Councillor - Mile-End).

Concerned with the state of the borough, Vazquez explained that “what was once an iconic borough to live in has become the epicenter of rent hikes, abandoned small businesses, inaccessibility, and uncared-for common spaces.” To remedy these issues, Movement Montreal’s Le-Plateau-Mont-Royal team plans to “support local businesses, build social housing units, and better address homelessness in the borough.”

“We are running because we have tried to speak with local officials to change things, but our messages are not attended to or cared for,” explained Tessier, a longtime advocate for housing rights. Echoing these concerns, Lessard explained that “the borough - and the city, needs solution-based approaches to the housing crisis that Movement Montreal can offer.” These policies, Holness explained, include: 1) working with owners of unused properties to build social housing units specifically for the Indigenous community members living in Milton-Parc; 2) providing stable and consistent funding to local organizations that support the city’s homeless population; and, 3) offering job training programs to youth and newcomers.

Adding to the team’s enthusiasm, Bolduc explained that she is “genuinely inspired by our neighbors and organizations that continue to preserve Le Plateau” and that she “plans to work day in and day out to do the same, improving the livelihoods of all residents of the borough.”
