UNDER A HOLNESS ADMINISTRATION, MONTREAL WILL BE RECOGNIZED AS THE MULTICULTURAL, BILINGUAL CITY THAT IT IS

Montreal, Quebec – on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, mayoral candidate and head of Movement Montreal, Balarama Holness, officially outlined his linguistic intentions for the city. “I am proud to announce that, under a Holness administration, Montreal will be officially recognized as a multicultural, bilingual city.”

With Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day around the corner, Holness was quick to remind Montrealers that, regardless of their first language, “we are all Quebecers. We are all residents of this beautiful province, and this beautiful city. Embracing our bilingualism will recognize the wholeness that Montreal is, celebrating the strength of its diversity.” Holness added, “Quebec is a distinct Francophone society in Canada, and Montreal is a distinct multicultural, bilingual city within Quebec.”

Holness was confident in stating that, while maintaining and celebrating Montreal’s bilingual reality, he and his party will continue to protect the French language. “All of Movement Montreal’s communications, press conferences, and public-facing documentation will be available in both French and English languages now, and into the future.”

Holness explained, “If we are to uphold a true democracy in Montreal, if we are to get the economy booming again, and if we are to position ourselves as a global leader that attracts foreign investment, we must embrace the bilingualism of our city! Doing so will not and does not take away from the centrality of Francophone culture and language in Montreal. It merely enhances it.”
